“I’m the One Who Brought the Stock Down to 1!” — A $150 Splurge on the SEKKA Yarn Set and My $1,200 Reflection on Last Year’s Obsession.

English

Did you all survive the recent events around February 10th without emptying your bank accounts? 😉

In Japan, February 10th is celebrated as “Knitting Day.”

Why? It’s a playful Japanese pun: the numbers 2 (Ni) and 10 (To) together sound exactly like “Knit” (Ni-To)! Because of this, many yarn shops across Japan host special sales and events. It’s a dangerous time for any knitter’s wallet!

While I managed to hold off on the 10th itself, I did something just as thrilling. The moment my credit card cycle refreshed in early February, I hit the “Purchase” button with trembling fingers.

My final treat of the season has arrived: the SEKKA Yarn Set from amirisu’s Travel vol.3. Price tag: 22,000 JPY (approx. $150).

amirisu is a yarn shop based in Japan, but they also offer international shipping! You can check out their international online store here:

The 0 Threshold: To Buy or Not to Buy?

SEKKA is the latest design in the Travel series, but honestly, I originally had my heart set on “NAGISA” from Vol.2. But when my husband offered to buy it for me as a birthday gift… it was already SOLD OUT.
I even visited Walnut Tokyo to see the colors in person, and they were so beautiful it hurt.

Then, the SEKKA set launched. Even though my birthday had passed, I saw it—the perfect colorway. But again, that price. $150! For me, anything up to $110 is a “treat.” But once it crosses $140, my finger freezes on the screen. XD

I added it to my cart, removed it, added it again… I was a mess. I finally made a deal with the Knitting Gods: “If it’s still in stock after my credit card cycle resets, it’s destiny.”

I checked the stock every day like a stalker. I saw the numbers dropping. Finally, the day came… Stock: 2.

I BOUGHT IT! I’m the one who turned that “2” into a “1”! Mwahahaha! >:D
It went SOLD OUT immediately after. Victory is mine!

Texture & Color: A “Soft” Surprise

The yarn is amirisu Sprint (100% Superwash Merino Wool).

  • Color: MC “KAZENO-YOIN”(Echo of the Wind) has a stunning pale blue variegation with sharp orange and navy speckles. It looks so much more complex and beautiful in person than on my phone screen! B-)
  • Texture: It feels like a truly soft, high-quality wool. Compared to some rustic British wools, it’s much gentler on the skin. It has a slight “bite” while knitting, but I know it will soften up beautifully after blocking. It’s that perfect balance of rustic charm and premium softness.

“Knitting is an Affordable Hobby”… Seriously?

Looking back at last year, I’m in shock. Between panic-buying kits to “farewell winter” and the Brooklyn Tweed discontinuation craze, I spent nearly $1,200 on yarn in just the first six months.

Then I spent $35 on shipping alone just to import Malabrigo… and we all know Malabrigo isn’t cheap!

Japan’s public broadcaster (NHK) once claimed that “Knitting is an affordable hobby.”
Well… I guess if you compare it to owning a race car or a vintage motorcycle, sure… it’s “affordable.”

My 2026 Vows

  1. Prioritize my stash.
  2. Frog and reuse old projects.
  3. Be EXTREMELY intentional with new purchases.

…But honestly? This SEKKA set was special. Sometimes, the FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) on a unique colorway is far more painful than the purchase itself.

My shopping spree ends here. …Probably. ;P
